Saiun-in is a historic Jodo-shu temple, home to a sacred stone and graves of Aizu samurai.

What it is

  • A Jodo-shu temple, sub-temple of Konkai-Komyoji temple.
  • Founded by Sogen on April 8, 1616.
  • Also known as Mannichiji and Shiunseki.
  • Family temple for deceased Aizu clan samurai.

What to see

  • Principal image is Amitabha Tathagata.
  • The Shiunseki stone, sat on by Honen Shonin in 1175.
  • Shiunseki-do, rebuilt in 1680 by Sonshin.
  • Graves of 352 Aizu clan samurai.
