What it is
- An active volcano located on the southern edge of the Aira Caldera.
- A geological site formed approximately 26,000 years ago within Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park.
- A former island connected to the Osumi Peninsula by the massive 1914 eruption.
- One of Japan's Top 100 Geological Sites with a circumference of 55 kilometers.
What to see
- The highest peak, Kitadake, which reaches 1,117 meters above sea level.
- The Minamidake crater which has been actively erupting since 1955.
