Cape Sata is located at 31 degrees latitude, so it enjoys a warm, subtropical climate. The balmy temperatures allowed ancient horticulturists to grow all kinds of unusual and medicinal plants and herbs in the Sata Former Herb Garden. The region’s fertile volcanic soil further enhanced the area’s potential for growing medicinal herbs, making this an important place for medical research until the end of the Edo period (1603–1867).
