What it is

  • A volcanic island formed during the Anei eruption of Sakurajima in 1779.
  • Part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park located northeast of Sakurajima.
  • A settlement first established by residents from Sakurajima in 1800.
  • A breeding ground for the rare Uchiyama's grasshopper warbler.

What to see

  • Gosha Shrine which enshrines the deity Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto.
  • A small landmass measuring approximately 750 meters long and 400 meters wide.
  • The highest elevation point reaching 43 meters above sea level.

Getting there

  • Visitors must charter a sea taxi as no regular public transportation serves the island.
