Shinjima
新島
A small volcanic island in Kagoshima Bay formed during the 1779 eruption, now home to a shrine and rare birds.
What it is
- A volcanic island formed during the Anei eruption of Sakurajima in 1779.
- Part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park located northeast of Sakurajima.
- A settlement first established by residents from Sakurajima in 1800.
- A breeding ground for the rare Uchiyama's grasshopper warbler.
What to see
- Gosha Shrine which enshrines the deity Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto.
- A small landmass measuring approximately 750 meters long and 400 meters wide.
- The highest elevation point reaching 43 meters above sea level.
Getting there
- Visitors must charter a sea taxi as no regular public transportation serves the island.
