Shōgaku-in Temple
正覚院 (岩手県岩手町)
Ancient Tendai temple, founded in 807, known for its sacred spring and historic cedar tree.
What it is
- A Tendai sect temple.
- Also known as Midō Kannon.
- Founded in 807 by Sakanoue Tamuramaro.
- 32nd sacred site of the Ōshū Kannon Pilgrimage.
What to see
- Current Buddha hall, rebuilt in 1970.
- Yuhazu no Izumi spring behind the main hall.
- Source of the Kitakami River.
- Large cedar tree beside the main hall.
- Cedar tree is said to be 1200 years old.
