Shōmyō-in Temple
松明院
Shomyoin is a historic Jodo-shu temple with unique Edo-period architecture.
What it is
- A Jodo-shu Buddhist temple.
- Founded in 1368 as a small Buddhist hall.
- Rebuilt and named Shomyoin in 1510.
- Became the family temple of the Okudono Matsudaira family.
What to see
- A bell tower gate.
- Priest's quarters.
- Main gate.
- Mud wall with gunports, built around 1820.
