Tennyū-ji Temple
天猷寺
Tennyu-ji is a historic Rinzai temple with unique artifacts and a beautiful gate.
What it is
- Rinzai sect Myoshin-ji school Ryusenmon-ha temple.
- Founded in 1616 by Masatsugu Baba.
- Named after Masasuke Baba's posthumous Buddhist name.
- Moved to its current location in 1680.
What to see
- Main hall rebuilt in 1734 from a single zelkova tree.
- Hananoki Gate built from rare Hananoki wood.
- Gate designated a cultural property in 1956.
- Statues of Benzaiten and Tenjin enshrined in 1719.
- Palanquin used by the Baba clan and chief priests.
- Spear called the "Cursed Blood Spear."
