Tennyu-ji is a historic Rinzai temple with unique artifacts and a beautiful gate.

What it is

  • Rinzai sect Myoshin-ji school Ryusenmon-ha temple.
  • Founded in 1616 by Masatsugu Baba.
  • Named after Masasuke Baba's posthumous Buddhist name.
  • Moved to its current location in 1680.

What to see

  • Main hall rebuilt in 1734 from a single zelkova tree.
  • Hananoki Gate built from rare Hananoki wood.
  • Gate designated a cultural property in 1956.
  • Statues of Benzaiten and Tenjin enshrined in 1719.
  • Palanquin used by the Baba clan and chief priests.
  • Spear called the "Cursed Blood Spear."
