Tōboku-ji Temple

What it is

• A temple of the Myoshinji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism founded in the early Edo period.
• The site originated as a hermitage called Tohoku-an founded by Shido Munan.
• The temple moved to its current location in Shibuya in 1696.
• It served as a burial site for the Uesugi and Shimazu samurai families.
