Togakuin is a historic Shingon temple with a secret Buddha, worth visiting for its unique heritage.

What it is

  • A Shingon-shu Chizan-ha temple.
  • Founded in 1288 by the monk Gekku.
  • Originally named Daiganji in 1558.

What to see

  • The principal image is a Yakushi Nyorai statue.
  • The Yakushi Nyorai is a hibutsu (secret Buddha).
  • It is opened every 20 years by Kono descendants.
