Tōkō-ji Temple
東光寺
Toko-ji is a historic Rinzai Zen temple with a rich past and significant Buddhist statues.
What it is
- A Rinzai sect Myoshinji school temple.
- Founded by Saicho in the early Heian period.
- The 6th temple of the Seimino 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
- Re-established by Daishu Soko in the Eisho era.
What to see
- A self-carved Yakushi Nyorai statue enshrined by Saicho.
- A Senju Kannon statue is enshrined.
- The main hall was built in the Tenpo era.
- The bell tower was built in the Tenpo era.
