Umashima
馬島
A quiet island in the Seto Inland Sea offering lighthouse views and shrine access via the Shimanami Kaido cycling route.
What it is
- A small inhabited island located within the Geiyo Islands of the Seto Inland Sea
- A former grazing ground for horses managed by the Imabari Domain during the Edo period
- Home to a tiny local population of approximately thirteen people as of 2021
- A stop along the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridges between Imabari and other islands

Getting there
- Cyclists and pedestrians can access the island using an elevator from the bridge above
- Regular ferry services connect the island to Hashihama Port
- Only authorized vehicles are permitted to use the island's highway interchange
