Utō Shrine in Aomori City is dedicated to the Munakata Sanjojin goddesses. This shrine also enshrines Inari Okami and Sarutahiko Okami, among other deities. Its history stretches back to ancient times, with a small shrine originally built by Yasakata.
The shrine was rebuilt during the Daidō era by Sakanoue Tamuramaro. Over centuries, it was revered and protected by powerful clans, including the Nanbu clan from 1201 to 1592 and later the Tsugaru clan. Its status was elevated to a Prefectural Shrine in 1876, having been a Village Shrine since 1873.
In the early 20th century, Utō Shrine expanded its spiritual presence by merging with other local shrines. Inari Shrine was incorporated in July 1907, followed by Kaizumi Shrine in September of the same year.
