Yakushiji is a historic Tendai temple with important cultural properties, worth visiting for its ancient statues.

What it is

  • A Tendai sect temple.
  • Founded in 806 by Sakanoue Tamuramaro.
  • Rebuilt as a Shingon temple around 1370.
  • Renamed Yakushiji in 1594.

What to see

  • Wooden Yakushi Nyorai and two attendant figures.
  • These figures are important cultural properties.
  • Twelve divine generals are housed here.
  • These generals are town cultural properties.
  • The main hall, rebuilt in 1965.
