Yamazaki Shōten

What it is

• A Shingon-kei independent temple, officially named Kannon-ji.
• Known popularly as Yamazaki Shōten, with mountain name Myōon-zan.
• Rebuilt in the early Edo period by Mokujiki Ikū.
• Principal image is an Eleven-faced Senju Kannon.

What to see

• Main hall, relocated from Saikannon-ji in 1880.
• Shōtendo, also relocated from Saikannon-ji in 1880.
• Storehouse, the only building surviving the Kinmon Incident.
• Large lantern, donated by Sumitomo Kichizaemon Tomonobu in 1697.
• Many cherry trees planted on the temple grounds.

When to go

• Spring, for viewing the many cherry trees.
