One of Japan's three major Myoken shrines, famous for its UNESCO-recognized autumn festival featuring a unique turtle-snake creature.
What it is
- One of the three major Myoken shrines in Japan, established by imperial decree in 1186.
- Dedicated to the deities Amenominakanushi-no-kami and Kuninotokotachi-no-mikoto.
- Formerly known as Myoken-gu before being renamed in 1871.
- An ancient spiritual site with an upper shrine founded on Mount Yokodake in 795.
