A historic Shingon Buddhist temple founded in the ninth century, once housing the grounds for Yokohama's first foreign cemetery.

What it is

  • A Koyasan Shingon Buddhist temple located in the Minami Ward of Yokohama.
  • Founded between 806 and 810 and later rebuilt in 1928 after an earthquake.
  • The original site once included the grounds of the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery.
  • The temple formerly served as the administrator for the nearby Itsukushima Shrine.

What to see

  • The grave of Kohachi Joro is located on the temple grounds.
  • A Yakushido hall rebuilt in 1972 at the original Motomachi location.
