Zōtoku-in Temple
増徳院
A historic Shingon Buddhist temple founded in the ninth century, once housing the grounds for Yokohama's first foreign cemetery.
What it is
- A Koyasan Shingon Buddhist temple located in the Minami Ward of Yokohama.
- Founded between 806 and 810 and later rebuilt in 1928 after an earthquake.
- The original site once included the grounds of the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery.
- The temple formerly served as the administrator for the nearby Itsukushima Shrine.
What to see
- The grave of Kohachi Joro is located on the temple grounds.
- A Yakushido hall rebuilt in 1972 at the original Motomachi location.
- Historical land once designated by the Shogunate for American graves in 1854.
