Hōtaiji is a Sōtō Zen temple with a unique founding story and a rare statue.

What it is

  • A Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple.
  • Founded by Kendō Chōsatsu.
  • Established during the Keichō era (1596-1615).
  • Named after a "treasure bag" found on site.

What to see

  • Main hall enshrines a wooden Shō Kannon statue.
  • Shō Kannon statue attributed to Unkei.
  • Yakushi-dō enshrines the Tora Yakushi Nyorai.

When to go

  • Yakushi-dō opens only in the year of the tiger.
