Hōtai-ji Temple
宝袋寺
Hōtaiji is a Sōtō Zen temple with a unique founding story and a rare statue.
What it is
- A Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple.
- Founded by Kendō Chōsatsu.
- Established during the Keichō era (1596-1615).
- Named after a "treasure bag" found on site.
What to see
- Main hall enshrines a wooden Shō Kannon statue.
- Shō Kannon statue attributed to Unkei.
- Yakushi-dō enshrines the Tora Yakushi Nyorai.
When to go
- Yakushi-dō opens only in the year of the tiger.
