Kōmyō-ji Temple
光明寺
Kōmyō-ji Temple is the head temple of a Buddhist sect, famous for autumn leaves.
What it is
- Head temple of the Seizan Jōdo-shū sect.
- Founded in 1198 by Renjō.
- Renamed Kōmyō-ji in 1232 by Emperor Shijō.
- Hōnen first taught the Nembutsu here.
What to see
- Main image is a statue of Hōnen Shōnin.
- Main hall (Mieidō) rebuilt in 1753.
- Amidado rebuilt in 1799.
- Honbyo (main mausoleum) rebuilt in 1656.
- Sōmon (main gate) rebuilt in 1845.
