Konjoin is a historic Tokyo temple, rebuilt after fire, with ties to the Tokugawa shogunate.

What it is

  • A Shingon-shu Buzan-ha Buddhist temple.
  • Founded by Gyoei between 1593 and 1596.
  • Received official shuin from Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1649.
  • Successive shoguns' shuinjo documents still exist.

What to see

  • The Amida-do, a hall dedicated to Amida Buddha.
  • Temple rebuilt in 1957 to its original scale.
