A 17th-century Rinzai sect temple in Kyoto featuring modern Zen gardens designed by the renowned Mirei Shigemori.

What it is

  • A Rinzai sect temple founded in 1669 on land donated by Prince Fushiminomiya Sadayuki.
  • The temple houses a Sho-kanzeon Bosatsu statue as its main deity.
  • Originally named Seijitsu-an, the current name was adopted in 1706 following a fire.

What to see

  • The Shinwa-no-niwa and Shingetsu-tei gardens designed by landscape architect Mirei Shigemori.
  • A main hall completed in 1916 and a bell tower built in 1977.
  • The mountain gate which was added to the complex in 1986.
  • A Bentendo shrine displaying a unique floating cat votive tablet.

  • The temple is located an 18-minute walk from Nijo Station.
