Kumano Shrine

What it is

• A branch shrine of Kumano Hayatama Taisha in Wakayama Prefecture.
• Dedicated to Izanami-no-Mikoto, Hayatamao-no-Mikoto, and Kotosa-kao-no-Mikoto.
• Separated from Pukoji Temple in 1868 due to Shinbutsu-bunri order.
• Became a village shrine in 1871, promoted in 1933.

What to see

• Kumano Sansho Gongen statues are enshrined in the inner sanctuary.
• Statues were made from stone from nearby mountains.

When to go

• Shimofukuda Sasara Shishimai is dedicated at summer festivals.
