Mount Mashu

What it is

• The highest peak of the Mashu Caldera rim at 857 meters above sea level.
• Known as Kamuinupuri in the Ainu language, meaning mountain of the gods.
• A volcanic formation located within the protected Akan-Mashu National Park in Hokkaido.
• One of the 100 Mountains of Hokkaido formed after the creation of the caldera.

What to see

• Views of Lake Mashu sitting 355 meters below the mountain peak.
• A steep crater wall that drops 482 meters down to the floor.
• A hiking trail that connects the summit to the First Observatory.
• The junction where the trail meets the path from Mount Nishibetsu.
