Kōzen-ji Temple
興禅寺 (愛南町)
Kōzen-ji is a historic Zen Buddhist temple with unique architecture and a significant Kannon statue.
What it is
- A Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple.
- Founded by Kakui Eihon.
- Rebuilt in 1430 by Jikishin Sōhaku.
- Moved to its current location around 1800.
What to see
- Eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva standing statue is the principal image.
- Main hall and priest's quarters built in 1835.
- These were the first tiled-roof buildings in Minamiuwa-gun.
- Current main hall has a copper tile roof.
- Kannon Bodhisattva statue in the temple cemetery.
