Shinju-an
真珠庵
Shinju-an is a historic Zen sub-temple with important art and gardens.
What it is
- A sub-temple of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto.
- Associated with the Zen monk Ikkyu Sojun.
- Founded by Ikkyu Sojun during the Eikyo era (1429-1441).
- Rebuilt in 1491 by merchant Owa Sorin.
What to see
- Hojo (abbot's quarters) built in 1638.
- Paintings by Soga Jasoku and Hasegawa Tohaku in the Hojo.
- Teigyokuken teahouse, known for its design.
- Kuri (kitchen/living quarters) built in 1609.
- Hojo East Garden, a dry landscape garden.
