Shinkai-daijingū
新開大神宮
Historic shrine in Kumamoto dedicated to sun and harvest deities, rebuilt by a famous samurai.
What it is
- Shrine founded in 1445 by Otaguro Magoshichiro.
- Dedicated to Amaterasu-Omikami, the sun goddess.
- Also enshrines Toyouke-Omikami, god of harvest.
- Rebuilt by Kato Kiyomasa after being burned down.
What to see
- The historic well called Misogi-no-Ido.
- Site of the Shinpuren Rebellion.
When to go
- Grand Festival held annually on October 16th.
