Historic shrine in Kumamoto dedicated to sun and harvest deities, rebuilt by a famous samurai.

What it is

  • Shrine founded in 1445 by Otaguro Magoshichiro.
  • Dedicated to Amaterasu-Omikami, the sun goddess.
  • Also enshrines Toyouke-Omikami, god of harvest.
  • Rebuilt by Kato Kiyomasa after being burned down.

What to see

  • The historic well called Misogi-no-Ido.
  • Site of the Shinpuren Rebellion.

When to go

  • Grand Festival held annually on October 16th.
