Shōgen-ji Temple is a historic Rinzai Zen temple with important artifacts and a legacy of training.

What it is

  • A Rinzai Zen temple of the Myōshin-ji branch.
  • Founded in 1658 by Taigoku Yui.
  • Its mountain name is Myōhōzan.
  • Kanzan Egen stayed here for nine years around 1330.

What to see

  • Tokkō-an, Mentō-an, Daiki-an, and Funi-an sub-temples.
  • A large bell cast in March 1673.
  • A statue of Satō Kichiji.
  • Armor of the Satō family.
