Shōbō-ji Temple is a historic Shingon temple with unique gardens and a connection to the Tokugawa family.

What it is

  • Head temple of the Shingon sect Tōji school.
  • Originated in 754 with Chii Daitoku.
  • Rebuilt in 1615 and renamed Shōbō-ji.
  • Became a prayer temple for the Tokugawa family.

  • Principal image is the Three-faced Senju Kannon.
